Select Tool & Item Management (V)
Select and inspect map elements. Use Shift + Drag box-zoom, pan viewports, manage the Build panel with quick search, category filtering, layer stacking sorts, canvas view options, and multi-item bulk updates.
Select Tool & Item Management
Hotkey: V / EscPrimary interaction tool to select, drag, rotate, inspect, and batch-manage every item on your map via the canvas and Build panel.
Selection & Inspection
The Select tool (hotkey V or Esc ) is your primary navigation and interaction tool. Whenever you finish drawing a shape or placing a pin, Layerpin automatically switches to the Select tool so you can inspect item details in the right sidebar.
Shift + Drag Box Zoom
When you need to inspect a dense cluster of pins, an intricate machinery part, or a specific room:
- 1Hold Shift: Press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard.
- 2Drag Bounding Box: Click and drag across the exact canvas region you wish to inspect.
- 3Instant Precision Framing: Release your mouse, and the viewport instantly zooms in to frame that selected rectangle.
Arrow Key Viewport Panning
When inspecting an enlarged map section (for example at 2x, 4x, or deep zoom levels), you can pan across neighboring regions without resetting your zoom:
Press any Arrow Key to smoothly nudge the viewport across the map by a fixed gap. The view shifts directly to adjacent areas while maintaining your exact zoom level.
Style & Content Clipboard Accelerators
Copies visual parameters (colors, border width, fill opacity, icon shape) without changing the recipient's title or description.
Copies title, description, tags, and structured fields across items without altering their individual visual colors or borders. See all shortcut combinations in the Keyboard Shortcuts reference.
Build Panel: Markers & Shapes Management
The Build Panel on the editor's left rail acts as your map's master inventory and layer stack. While the canvas gives you visual direct manipulation, the Build panel provides granular control over every element:
Lists all point annotations, numbered badges, and icon pins. Displays active item count and plan limits (e.g., Markers (24/100)).
Houses all boundary polygons, rectangles, circles, connector lines, brush strokes, and interactive transparent click hotspots.
Clicking an item in the list focuses and selects it on the canvas. Clicking on the canvas auto-scrolls the list to that item.
Toggle visibility (Eye icon) or lock positions (Lock icon) directly from each row without opening inspector drawers.
Grab the vertical grip handle on any row to drag items up or down to fine-tune front-to-back canvas stacking.
Quick Search & Category Filters
When managing complex floorplans or large campus directories with hundreds of pins, the search and filter controls let you isolate exact items in milliseconds:
The search bar instantly filters visible rows as you type. It indexes:
- Item titles, labels & custom names
- Markdown descriptions & body copy
- Tags and keywords attached to elements
- Custom field keys & values (e.g. Room 204)
- Vector shape text and embedded labels
Click the Filter icon alongside the search bar to narrow the Build list by category or classification dimension:
Exhibitors (42)).Layer Sorting & Canvas Stacking Order
In digital maps, the layer order determines visual overlap. In Layerpin, items at the top of the Build list appear in front on the canvas, while items at the bottom appear behind. Rather than manually dragging items one by one, use the Sort menu:
Sorts titles alphabetically for orderly index navigation.
Clusters all items belonging to the same category together.
Groups active elements together, pushing hidden items to back.
Flips the canvas stacking order front-to-back in 1 click.
Editor Canvas View Options
Click the Eye icon in the Build panel header to access authoring view switches. These controls change what is visible on your working editor canvas without affecting your published map:
Temporarily hides every marker and shape on the canvas so you can inspect the bare underlying floorplan image or illustration without annotations obstructing your view.
By default, the editor keeps all elements visible regardless of zoom level. Enabling this toggle previews how visitor zoom visibility thresholds actually hide elements at current zoom.
Highlights transparent shape click zones with dashed neon outlines. Essential for locating and editing invisible hotspot perimeters that have zero fill and stroke opacity.
Multi-Selection & Batch Actions
When restructuring map data, you don't have to edit items one by one. Layerpin includes multi-selection and a dedicated bottom action rail:
Click a starting item, hold Shift, and click an ending item to select every item in between.
Check or uncheck individual items in the list to assemble a custom non-contiguous selection set.
Click the master checkbox in the bottom rail to select every item matching your current search or category filter.
Deep Bulk Update Panel
Clicking the Sliders icon in the bottom action rail opens the full Bulk Update Panel. This enables you to restyle, re-categorize, and reconfigure dozens of pins or shapes simultaneously:
Move all selected items into a single category, or reassign multi-dimension category tags across your items.
Apply a uniform brand color, stroke border, or fill background across all selected pins and vector polygons.
Batch-change marker symbols from the icon library, configure border widths, size modes, and background paddings.
Adjust stroke width, outline styles (solid, dashed, dotted), and fill transparency across all selected boundary areas.
Add new tags (e.g. #vip, #stage-1) or strip specific tags from all selected items at once.
Configure uniform Min Zoom and Max Zoom display thresholds so an entire category fades in and out together on zoom.
Editor Sidebar & More Actions
The left vertical sidebar is your central command rail. In addition to switching between View, Build, Library, Media, Translate, Customize, and Analytics, the More (…) menu provides vital data transfer and administrative utilities:
Downloads a complete portable JSON backup (.layerpin.json) containing all pins, shapes, categories, translations, and styles.
Exports all pin coordinates, descriptions, tags, and custom fields into a structured spreadsheet for editing or external databases.
Upload CSV, Excel (.xlsx), or Apple Numbers (.numbers) sheets with interactive validation and Append / Replace modes.
Clone your entire map in the Dashboard (... → Duplicate map) including image tiles, pins, shapes, and custom fields into a private draft.
The bottom cloud icon displays real-time saving status: Saved (cloud check), Saving (spinner), or Save (pending draft). The Publish button instantly deploys changes to the global edge CDN or toggles an existing public map back to private.
Quickly toggle Hide all items from the More menu to view your clean base image underneath without deleting any annotations. Click again or use ⌥I to restore all markers and shapes.
